21st Century Malaise
I used to work at the Hawthorne Valley Farm, in their Visiting Students Program. My boss, Nick, writes wonderful letters every Christmas to update all of us HVF alum on life at the fah’m. Here’s the last few lines from this year’s letter: Don’t worry, we also get plenty of the usual 21st Century malaise: uncertainty, conflict, hurry, and distraction. Still, I can safely say...

How soon until Starbucks delivers?
I’m sure that it will begin with business/office deliveries, and then down the road residences may be an option. Anyway, this is what I thought tonight when I really wanted coffee but didn’t have the time to run out and get some admist my cleaning. Also, this thought reminds me of a game Steve and I play: what’s next for Starbucks? When they started bringing in all the non-coffee...

Shorter candidates
From the unofficial official Edwards blogger Will Creeley, I found this:Obama: The system sucks, but I’m so awesome that it’ll melt away before me. Edwards: The system sucks, and we’re gonna have to fight like hell to destroy it. Clinton: The system sucks, and I know how to work within it more than anyone. It’s originally from Atrios.

This is a good article about etsy.com! I am proud to say that etsy is a big part of the reason that I am currently able to work from home, making and selling things that I love. — anjalouise I bought a couple of things from Etsy shops for Christmas. One item came from Buenos Aires and the other from Mexico City. They didn’t take long to get to me and Anja’s right, both of the women I...
We Been Discovered
Reprinted. I wrote this in February 2006 on another blog and came back to it for personal reasons tonight. Thought I’d repost. Last week, while catching up with a friend of mine, I revisited feelings of self-doubt and paranoia that have long haunted me. About a month or so ago, after his boss had been working for 21 straight days without any sort of day off, my friend was told that the...
Almost Awkward
me: I almost signed a work email "Whitey"
Natalie: I almost signed one "Nat" the other day bc I didn't finish my name because I found a spelling error
me: whitey is worse
Natalie: no because [mine] it's a more obvious typo "All the best, Nat"
me: well mine was to an Hispanic person
Natalie: hahahhahahahha i Just laughed outloud
Natalie: you win

Nightmares
As a follow up to yesterday’s post, I am now pissed that I watched Apocalypto Sunday night. I had a horrible nightmare which included the deaths of children and multiple rape scenes. I realize now that prior to Sunday I hadn’t seen a violent film in quite a while and I’d like to return to that space.
I do believe we have to take on a very serious issue of too much influence of...

Mel needs help
I watched half of Apocalypto last night with some friends and holy hell, Mel Gibson has problems. Just when you think he can’t gross you out more with his lust for gore and violence, a character stumbles into a field of decapitated bodies.
From an email to Brynn, who lives in the mountains
I had a dream that you asked me to drop your garbage off at the dump when I was visiting. So I went there and as I turned down the road, I saw a bear. As I got out of the car, I saw that they were not black bears as I originally thought but instead polar bears. This alarmed me because black bears will scatter if you yell and throw things at them (apparently) but I sensed polar bears were meaner. I...

Monster Snow Storm
I’ve been reading the Weather Channel’s front-page narrative, titled “Monster Snow Storm.” It’s the first time I’ve read these longer pieces and they’re kind of poetic: After a quick burst of sleet and freezing rain mainly from the Mason-Dixon Line northward this early morning, rain will rapidly push northward from Virginia, through eastern Pennsylvania...
An American History
I heard Andrew K. Sandoval-Strausz on NPR this morning talking about his new book, Hotel: An American History. Super interesting stuff, the book is now on my short list/wishlist. A couple thoughts: I haven’t stayed in many grand hotels (yet), mostly because I don’t have enough money (yet?). Also, my good friend Brynn lives in the Adirondaks and her small town all but shuts down in the...
20 Things You Didn't Know About Snow →
via jakoblodwick. #8 Thundersnow—a blizzard with visible lightning—is rare. But some scientists hypothesize that all lightning is born of snow that’s just out of sight: Ice crystals in clouds collide and generate electricity. We had thundersnow last year during the October storm. I tried to get my friends Eric and Becca to hang out and they responded by saying, “There are snow...
